A Race Against Time: How Compassion Saved a Life

Cedarville Hospital

Last Thursday at 5 PM, the emergency room buzzed with urgency. A young man, struck by a truck, lay fighting for breath. Even with oxygen, his lungs struggled—every gasp a battle. The team sprang into action. A quick exam and ultrasound revealed the brutal truth: multiple rib fractures and a haemothorax, his chest cavity filling with blood. Without immediate intervention, he wouldn’t survive.

Time was slipping away. We rushed to explain the gravity to his family—a chest tube had to be inserted. With their consent, we improvised an underwater-sealed chest tube (one not even billed to them) and watched as 850ml of dark, life-stealing blood drained out. Relief swept over the room like a wave. His breathing eased. Color returned. Two units of blood later, he stabilized, but the fight wasn’t over.

Then came the next hurdle: “No beds available.” For nearly 72 hours, calls to referral centers hit dead ends. Frustration mounted. But thanks to the relentless efforts of colleagues rallying behind him, a door finally opened. He was transferred, hope intact.

Stories like this remind us why we do what we do. But they also expose gaps. That improvised chest tube saved his life—yet not every patient gets so lucky. We’re determined to stock more emergency kits, like chest tubes, to turn despair into miracles for others.
